Chapter 20

Elmwood, the nearest town, was a forty-minute drive. Once they had emerged from the rugged trail that led to the back of Paul’s house, the Jeep pulled onto a paved road that wound leisurely through the undulating countryside. The land was mostly virgin forest, broken periodically with rocky outcroppings and small lakes. Here and there, a farm had been carved from the wilderness, its fields dotted with sheep or cows. Sarah watched enthralled as the scenery rolled past, each curve in the road revealing an intriguing new vista.

When they finally entered the small town of Elmwood, it looked like something from another time. There was a main street, predictably called Main Street and, at the principal intersection, Sarah saw a general store, a gas station, a hardware store and a bank. Farther up, set back from the street was a little church built of stone.

Paul glanced over at Sarah, enjoying her fascination. “The town of Elmwood has been here for over three hundred years. It was built on a river that feeds Crystal Lake so you can actually get here from my place by boat. It takes a couple of hours, but it’s a nice trip. We’ll do it some day.”

“It sounds fun.”

“It’s hard to believe,” Paul continued, “but there is actually a small shopping plaza on the other side of town. It was built last year. Nothing fancy, maybe a half dozen stores; but there’s a women’s clothing store and a drug store. I think you’ll have better luck with your shopping there. However, tell me your shoe size and I’ll jump out and get you a pair of sandals at the general store.”

Paul parked and returned moments later with a pair of black leather sandals. Sarah slipped them on. “Perfect,” she smiled.

They reached the shopping plaza and Paul stopped to let her out. “There you go. You should be able to get everything you need. I need to buy some parts for my boat at the marina about a half-mile away. What if I meet you back here in an hour? There is an ice cream store on the right and a small park beside it. If you finish early, buy yourself an ice cream cone and I’ll meet you there.”

Sarah finished her shopping with ten minutes to spare and changed into a pair of white shorts and a black T-shirt. Taking Paul’s suggestion, she bought herself an ice cream cone, wandered over to the park and sat on one of the benches, simply enjoying the sun and fresh air.

Paul arrived right on schedule and smiled when he saw her new outfit. “Looks like you made out all right.”

Sarah gave him a satisfied grin. “They had a lot of nice things. I even bought a dress and a bathing suit. I hope you don’t mind.”

“Not at all. I should have suggested it. I’ll have to take you out to dinner so you can wear it.”

“Did you get what you needed for your boat?”

Paul nodded and sat
